STF (Smooth Trans Focus) lens focusing on the best blur effect in the history of α lenses
- As the G-master of the Premium Lens Series, this lens is a medium telephoto single focal length lens that is suitable for shooting flowers, portraits, fashion, weddings, etc., with thorough attention paid not only to high resolution performance but also to the impressive blur effect that only an STF lens can produce.
- The newly developed Apodization (APD) optical element (*1) is used. Transitions from the focus plane to defocused (out-of-focus) areas and contours of bright areas are smoothly rendered with the sophisticated blurring characteristic of STF lenses. In addition, the lens thoroughly suppresses distortion of the blurred image (aperture eclipse) that is usually noticeable at the periphery of a large-aperture lens. The lens delivers beautiful circular blur throughout the entire image area. This not only highlights the main subject, but also brings a natural three-dimensional effect to the entire image, creating an impressive finish to the work.
- In addition, the lens supports both contrast AF (autofocus) and image phase detection AF (*2), and its direct-drive SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) provides quiet, high-speed, and highly accurate focusing for both still images and video.
- New features include a macro switching ring for close-up shooting (minimum focusing distance of 0.57 m, maximum magnification of 0.25x) and a built-in optical image stabilizer for shooting in dark locations. In addition, the lens is designed to be easy to operate and dustproof and drip-proof (*4) with a focus hold button, a focus mode switch for switching between AF and MF (manual focus), and an aperture ring (T No. 5.6 (*3) to 22).
*1：The effect is a kind of ND filter that reduces the amount of light transmitted from the center to the periphery of the lens.

3：T No. (T No.) 5.6. T No. is a value indicating the actual brightness of the lens, taking into account the transmittance of the lens. The aperture of this lens is F2.8. With the use of an apodization optical element, the brightness is the same as that of a normal F5.6 lens.
*4: Although the lens is constructed to be dustproof and drip-proof, it does not completely prevent dust and water droplets from entering the lens.
