Product Features

Excellent resolving power from F1.2. Large aperture, single focal length lens.

High image quality as a large aperture lens with a maximum aperture of F1.2

- With a maximum aperture of 1.2, this large-aperture lens allows you to enjoy large, beautiful bokeh from the widest aperture setting. The lens is also suitable for dark scenes such as nighttime and indoors, as it allows for high image quality shooting at high shutter speeds with minimal blurring.

- Optical design with 15 elements in 9 groups including 1 UD lens, 2 ground aspherical lenses, and 1 glass-molded aspherical lens with special optical materials. Chromatic aberration is reduced by placing a lens with a large aperture close to the camera's imaging surface. High-resolution and high-contrast imaging performance is achieved from the center to the periphery of the image.

Reduction of flare and ghosting through the use of the special ASC coating

- ASC (Air Sphere Coating) is a special coating that provides significant anti-reflective effect for light entering the lens at a near-perpendicular angle to the lens. This significantly suppresses flare and ghosting, which can cause image quality degradation. High image quality is achieved in a variety of environments.

Close-up photography at a minimum shooting distance of 0.4 m

- The minimum shooting distance of 0.4m is achieved. This allows you to get close to the subject and take attractive close-up shots with beautiful bokeh.

RF Lenses Made Possible by Free Optical Design

Optical design that was once thought to be impossible has been realized in each and every lens.

Operability has also been renewed with the addition of a new control ring. The new control ring brings high image quality forward into a new era.

Toward the highest image quality imaginable. Large aperture mount x short back focus.

The RF mount inherits the large 54mm aperture of the EF mount while downsizing the camera. It also features a new short back focus. This allows the lens to be positioned close to the image pickup surface, enabling a high degree of freedom in optical design. This has enabled the development of the RF28-70mm F2 L USM, a zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2, and the RF50mm F1.2 L USM, which is extremely sharp from the maximum aperture, both of which were impossible to commercialize in the EF mount from a practical standpoint.

Strengthening the linkage between camera and lens. New mount communication system.

The number of electronic contacts at the mount connection has been increased from 8 to 12 on the EF mount. The communication speed has been greatly improved (new mount communication system). This enhances the linkage between the camera and lens. In addition to operability and expressiveness, image stabilization performance has also been greatly improved.

Realization of even more comfortable operability
[Control ring]

A new control ring allows you to assign aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and exposure compensation as desired. The control ring can be flexibly customized to suit your shooting style.

Instant optical correction after shooting
[In-camera digital lens optimizer]

The "Digital Lens Optimizer" function properly corrects aberrations and diffraction, which vary from lens to lens, and restores the original resolution of the photo. The data for the Digital Lens Optimizer held by the RF lens is instantly transmitted to the camera side through high-capacity, high-speed communications. Aberration and diffraction processing can now be performed while shooting.

New Mount Communication System Enables Highly Accurate Image Stabilization [Dual Sensing IS].

When shooting still images, the dual-sensing IS function detects the amount of camera shake based on image information from the camera's CMOS sensor in addition to the lens sensor to provide more powerful image stabilization. This system detects and compensates for camera shake that cannot be detected by the IS on the lens with high precision, achieving an image stabilization effect of up to 5 stops.

* CIPA standard. When shooting still images. Compatible lenses: RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM / RF35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM (as of September 2018).

Excellent resolving power from a maximum aperture of F1.2

Various types of aberrations are well corrected by the large aperture mount and the latest optical design. From a maximum aperture of F1.2, the lens delivers high resolution and high contrast throughout the entire image range.

Dual-pixel CMOS AF and optimized lens control enable high-precision AF. This enables comfortable shooting even in situations where the depth of field is shallow and it is difficult to focus on the target area.

Beautiful bokeh and minimum focusing distance of 40cm

The shallow depth of field of F1.2 provides both a large, soft bokeh effect and sharp images. Despite its large aperture, the minimum focusing distance is 5cm shorter than that of the EF50mm F1.2L USM. The maximum magnification is 0.19x. This allows the photographer to get closer to the subject and enhance the beautiful bokeh effect.
