The optical design with 12 elements in 9 groups, including one UD lens* and one aspherical lens, suppresses chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, enabling crisp, clear images with minimal color blur, while achieving a compact and lightweight overall length of approximately 164.7 mm and a weight of 635 g.

- Fast and smooth AF with the "Nano USM" ultrasonic motor
Canon's proprietary "Nano USM" ultrasonic motor delivers high-speed, high-precision AF for still image shooting and smooth AF for movie shooting.
When the EOS R5 is attached, AF shooting is possible with a maximum distance measurement area of approximately 100% (horizontal) × 100% (vertical)* across the entire zoom range.
*When the subject frame is displayed in Face + Tracking Priority AF setting. Depending on the scene or subject, this function may not be available.
- Various Functions for Comfortable Shooting
Image stabilization assists hand-held shooting. When the EOS R5 is attached, image stabilization achieves 6.0 stops* of image stabilization during still image shooting through coordinated control with the camera's in-body image stabilization mechanism. When the EOS R5 is attached, which does not have an in-body image stabilization mechanism, the camera provides 5.5 stops* of image stabilization.
The maximum magnification of 0.41x (focal length 400mm) and minimum focusing distance of 0.88m (focal length 200mm) allow photographers to enjoy getting closer to subjects such as flowers.
