The wide angle of view makes it ideal for shooting panoramic landscapes, shooting indoors where it is difficult to maintain a sufficient distance from the subject, and a variety of other situations.

- Outstanding image quality and compact size

While taking advantage of the short back focus, two glass-molded aspherical lenses and one UD lens are effectively arranged to achieve both high image quality with high resolution and high contrast from the center to the periphery and a compact size suitable for lenses dedicated to mirrorless cameras. In addition, a lens storage mechanism, the first in the EF lens series, has been adopted to achieve compactness when carrying the lens.

Optimized lens placement and coatings minimize flare and ghosting.

- Outstanding AF performance for movie shooting

Optimized matching of the AF actuator (drive unit) and AF algorithm on the camera (EOS M) side enables quick AF. In addition, a lightweight focus lens optimized for movies and a newly designed focusing mechanism driven by a leadscrew-type stepping motor (STM) provide extremely quiet and smooth AF not only during still image shooting but also during movie shooting.

- Image stabilization function optimized for both still and moving image shooting

When shooting still images, the camera's image stabilizer provides an image stabilization effect of approximately 3 stops* in terms of shutter speed. (*Based on Canon standards. (*Based on Canon's standard, which is 1/(focal length x 1.6) second, the limit of the shutter speed at which blur-free shooting is generally possible.)

Dynamic IS with a wide image stabilization range that is effective when shooting movies while walking.

- Various Specifications for Comfortable Shooting

The minimum focusing distance is 0.15 m and the maximum magnification is 0.30x at the telephoto side, enabling close-up photography of subjects.

When the camera's (EOS M) focus mode is set to [AF + MF], the full-time manual focus mechanism enables instant manual focusing by simply rotating the focus ring after focusing on AF.

Metal components are used for exterior parts to achieve a high quality and stylish design.
