Adopts a removable tripod mount

The lens is equipped with a removable tripod mount, making it possible to carry the lens body alone if you want to reduce the weight as much as possible. When the tripod mount is removed and the Protective Cover is attached, the weight is 1,830 g. This reduces the burden of carrying the lens around. The elimination of the tripod stand reduces the number of protrusions, which is also useful when the tripod must be stored in a limited space. In addition, the tripod stand itself is made of magnesium, making it both strong and light.

The full range of specifications emphasizes mobility and ease of use.

Even the lightweight model has a full range of basic functions for a variety of shooting situations. A high-performance super-telephoto zoom lens that delivers high performance. Although it is a lightweight model that can be easily carried around and used in a variety of shooting situations, it is equipped with the high-performance line "Contemporary," including simplified dustproof and drip-proof performance, zoom lock by focal length index, water and stain repellent coating, MF switch at hand, and a newly designed tripod mount, A newly developed teleconverter (sold separately) that supports AF up to f/8 is also included.

Simple dustproof and drip-proof construction at the mount

As with the Sports line, a rubber sealing is used in the mount section. This protects the mount section, where dust and other contaminants are most likely to enter.

Water and dirt repellent coating on the lens for comfortable shooting

The front-most lens features a water and stain repellent coating that easily wipes away water droplets and prevents oil and grease from adhering to the lens. In addition to aiding comfortable use in harsh conditions, the lens surface is easy to maintain.

Zoom lock switch" that can be set for each major focal length

The new zoom lock switch allows the zoom ring to be locked at each focal length index. It can be locked at any focal length, and stable shooting is possible at either upward or downward angles. This allows for more stable shooting during long exposures, etc.

New "Intelligent OS" algorithm

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) mechanism for image stabilization employs an acceleration sensor to provide more precise image stabilization. The camera is equipped with two image stabilization modes: Mode 1, which is suitable for general shooting, and Mode 2, which is best suited for fluid shooting of motor sports and other activities. In Mode 2, an acceleration sensor and the new Intelligent OS image stabilization algorithm enable effective image stabilization even when the camera is moved vertically or diagonally, regardless of the horizontal or vertical position of the composition, so that the movement of the subject can be expressed without losing the effect of fluid shooting. This allows you to express the movement of the subject without losing the effect of the streaming shot.

*Not available for film cameras other than Nikon F6 and Canon EOS-1V.

Manual Override" function. Two full-time manual modes can be switched.

In addition to full-time manual focus, which allows switching from autofocus to manual focus simply by operating the focusing ring, the camera is now equipped with Manual Override (MO). When the focus switch is set to the MO position, the camera can switch to manual focus by rotating the focus ring even during continuous AF. By using the SIGMA USB DOCK (sold separately), it is possible to change the sensitivity at which the camera switches to manual focus when used in the MO position.

Optimized AF" for even faster and quieter focusing

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) enables faster and quieter AF speeds. In addition, the drive algorithm has been significantly revised from the previous model. As a result, the focus rate for Continuous AF (AF-C) has been improved by approximately 5%.

Highly accurate and robust brass bayonet mount

The brass mount is both highly accurate and robust. To withstand long-term use, surface treatment has been applied to increase strength and ensure high-quality lens manufacturing.

Thorough correction of lateral chromatic aberration through the use of FLD glass, SLD glass, etc.

Chromatic aberration is corrected to the utmost limit through the use of one FLD* ("F" Low Dispersion) glass element, which boasts performance equivalent to fluorite, and four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements. The use of special low-dispersion glass and other power optimization measures focus on correcting lateral chromatic aberration, which is particularly noticeable at the telephoto end and does not improve even when the lens is stopped down. This has resulted in high image rendering performance throughout the entire zoom range.

*FLD glass is an ultra-low dispersion glass with excellent transmittance and performance equivalent to "fluorite" with extremely low dispersion and high anomalous dispersion. The effective use of these glasses and their appropriate power placement have enabled us to correct residual chromatic aberration to the utmost limit and achieve excellent image rendering performance.

Flare and Ghosting

Thorough measures against flare and ghosting were taken from the initial stage of lens design, and the lens is designed to be less susceptible to strong incident light, such as backlighting. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high-contrast images even when shooting in backlit conditions. The attached hood effectively cuts out harmful light that can adversely affect the lens's rendering and prevents internal reflections from occurring.

Special Low Dispersion Glass

Chromatic aberration is a phenomenon in which the refractive index of glass differs according to the wavelength of light, causing the image formation point to shift for each color. Chromatic aberration tends to appear strongly in telephoto lenses and is a cause of poor image quality. To eliminate this chromatic aberration, a convex lens with a small difference in refractive index by color was combined with a concave lens with a large difference in refractive index by color to suppress axial chromatic aberration, but this still left a small amount of residual chromatic aberration = secondary spectrum. To thoroughly eliminate residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum), which could not be eliminated with conventional lenses, Sigma has introduced special low-dispersion glass with high correction capability for secondary spectrum in many of its lens products to achieve higher performance. Currently, Sigma's proprietary special low-dispersion glass comes in three types: ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass, SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass. FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass. FLD glass, in particular, is an ultra-low dispersion glass with excellent transmittance, with extremely low dispersion and performance equivalent to that of "fluorite," which has high anomalous dispersion. The effective use of these glasses and the appropriate power arrangement enable us to compensate for residual chromatic aberration to the utmost limit, resulting in excellent image rendering performance.

Circular Aperture

A 9-blade circular aperture is used. When shooting against a background of point light sources such as illumination or light shining on water, a circular bokeh effect can be obtained even when using an aperture near maximum aperture.

Combined with a newly designed teleconverter, AF can be used up to F8

The SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1401 can be used as a 210-840mm F7-9 MF telephoto zoom lens, and the SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-2001 can be used as a 300-1200mm F10-12.6 MF super-telephoto zoom lens. The SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-2001 can be used as a 300-1200mm F10-12.6 MF telephoto zoom lens. AF shooting is possible with the SIGMA TELE CONVERTER TC-1401 only when attached to a camera whose AF is compatible with F8.

* The camera may not focus when shooting subjects with low contrast or low luminance values.

Manufacturing worthy of the new line SGV concept
Newly developed, proprietary MTF measuring instrument "A1" for the highest performance in all products.

A good lens requires three conditions: good design, good manufacturing, and good inspection. The final decisive factor for a lens born from a well-thought-out concept and advanced, sophisticated Japanese manufacturing technology is the evaluation of lens performance. Until now, lens performance has been measured using an MTF measuring device that uses a standard image sensor, but now Sigma has developed a new proprietary MTF measuring device, the A1*, which uses a 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensor. At the Aizu factory, Sigma's only production site, all new products and lines will be inspected by the A1 before shipment. The MTF measurement value is high enough to support 35mm full-size digital SLR cameras with over 20 megapixels.
