Product Features
Unparalleled compactness and lightweight body. Large-aperture ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for full-size mirrorless SLR cameras with a ø67mm filter diameter for superior mobility.
- The second in a series of large-aperture lenses for Sony E-mount cameras compatible with full-size mirrorless SLR cameras. Ultra wide-angle zoom lens designed to be lightweight and compact, with an emphasis on practicality.
This product was developed by continuing the concept of the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036) of "making it compact because it is a frequently-used zoom lens. The lens was designed to be compact and lightweight above all while maintaining high optical performance. By deliberately keeping the focal length in the zoom range of 17-28mm, an overwhelmingly compact and lightweight lens of 99mm in length and 420g in weight was achieved. The overall length does not change during zooming, ensuring stable operability during shooting, and it is well balanced with the compact camera body for excellent mobility. In addition, the ø67mm filter diameter is extremely small, which is groundbreaking for an ultra-wide angle zoom lens, and since the filter diameter is the same as that of the Model A036, lens caps, PL filters, ND filters, etc. can be used in common. This allows the lens to be used with the Model A036 to create a very compact system.
- High resolution performance designed without compromise
The lens construction consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical lenses, two LD (Low Dispersion) lenses, a special glass material with abnormal light dispersion, and an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens, which is even more effective and has characteristics similar to fluorite, This effectively suppresses chromatic aberration and other various aberrations. In addition, the use of a BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coating, which boasts high anti-reflection performance, significantly reduces the occurrence of ghosting and flare. In addition, by utilizing the camera's functions*, the lens delivers a high level of resolution performance that is compatible with today's high pixel digital cameras, not only near the center but also from the maximum aperture to the periphery of the image across the entire zoom range. The combination of compactness, light weight, and high resolution performance makes it easy to enjoy shooting not only landscapes, but also architecture, snaps, and many other fields.
(*Please turn on the in-camera lens correction function before shooting.)
- High close-up shooting ability to expand the expressive power of the ultra-wide-angle zoom
At the wide-angle end (17mm), the lens offers an astonishing close-up shooting ability of 0.19m, which was highly acclaimed by the Model A036, and a maximum magnification of 1:5.2. Even at the 28mm telephoto end, the maximum magnification of 1:6 is achieved while maintaining a short minimum focusing distance of 0.26m. This allows the photographer to enjoy the unique expression of an ultra-wide-angle lens that emphasizes perspective, with close subjects appearing larger and distant subjects appearing smaller.
- Equipped with the RXD stepping motor unit
The RXD stepping motor unit is optimized for AF control and is equipped with a sensor that detects the lens position with high precision. The RXD provides extremely fast and precise AF operation, enabling precise focusing even when shooting moving subjects or movies. The RXD also features excellent quietness, which prevents the lens from recording driving noise during movie recording.
- Simplified drip-proof construction and anti-smudge coating for comfortable shooting
The lens barrel is equipped with drip-proof seals at key locations, including moving parts and joints, to prevent water from penetrating the lens. In addition, the frontmost surface of the lens is coated with a fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellent and stain-resistant. This coating makes it easy to wipe off water droplets, hand grease, and other contaminants, facilitating maintenance.
- Consistent operability and design in the large-aperture zoom series for full-size mirrorless cameras
As with the Model A036, the zoom ring is positioned forward and the focus ring is positioned backward, and the direction of the zoom ring during zooming and focusing is also aligned with that of the Model A036. Therefore, the operability is consistent throughout the series so as not to disrupt the tempo of photography. The design of the lens has a high degree of perfection, with attention paid to every detail, including a form that is straightforwardly in line with the internal structure, a thin luminous gold ring, and a metal mount that is highly precise and rigid. In particular, the luminous gold brand ring is designed to give the lens the appearance of a TAMRON-branded lens, both on its own and when mounted on a camera.
