Product Features
By reviewing the optical, mechanical, and electronic design of the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A009), not only has optical performance been improved, but also AF speed and accuracy have been increased, the image stabilization mechanism has been enhanced, and the minimum focusing distance has been shortened.
This large-aperture telephoto zoom lens has also undergone significant evolution through the adoption of eBAND coating, anti-smudge coating, dustproof and drip-proof construction, and compatibility with teleconverters.
- High resolution and contrast performance with beautiful bokeh and compatibility with tele-converter
The optical design of the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A009) has been completely redesigned. It achieves both resolution and contrast performance and beautiful bokeh throughout the entire zoom range. The lens construction consists of 23 elements in 17 groups, with XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) lenses appropriately positioned to thoroughly eliminate chromatic aberration, which tends to occur with large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses, throughout the entire zoom range to achieve uniform high image quality right to the edges of the image. This ensures uniform high image quality all the way to the periphery of the image.
The lens is also compatible with the TAMRON TELE CONVERTER 1.4x (Model TC-X14) and the TAMRON TELE CONVERTER 2.0x (Model TC-X20) teleconverters, which are accessories sold separately.
- VC with the highest image stabilization performance in its class (5 stops), which can be used according to the shooting situation.
Tamron's unique VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization mechanism employs a moving coil system. By enhancing the power and control performance of its drive system, Tamron has achieved a 5-step (*1) image stabilization effect (*2), the highest in its class (when VC MODE 3 is used). The camera is equipped with three correction modes, including a dedicated sink mode, which can be switched by a switch to suit different shooting scenes. This allows users to enjoy a higher degree of freedom in hand-held shooting in low-light conditions, where camera shake tends to occur.
*1: 70-200mm F/2.8 lens for 35mm-format full-size digital SLR cameras, as of January 2017. (Based on Tamron research)
*2: Based on CIPA standard, when using VC MODE3, for Canon: when using EOS-5DMKIII, for Nikon: when using D810.
- Dramatically improved AF speed and response
The camera is equipped with the "USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive)" ring-type ultrasonic motor, which is highly responsive and controllable and enables fast and highly accurate focusing. The use of two state-of-the-art high-performance microcomputers and an optimized algorithm have improved the focusing speed and accuracy compared to the previous Model A009. In addition, the full-time manual mechanism allows fine adjustment of focus in MF mode without switching the focus switch, even when shooting in AF mode.
- Realization of 0.95m minimum focusing distance
By reviewing the optical design and improving the focus cam and zoom cam inside the lens barrel, the minimum focusing distance has been shortened from 1.3m with the Model A009 to 0.95m with the Model A025. The maximum magnification is 1:6.1. Shortening the minimum focus distance expands the range of expression.
- Optimized and specially designed eBAND coating
The eBAND coating, which combines a nanostructured film with an ultra-low refractive index and conventional multi-coating technology, is newly adopted. eBAND coating is specially designed and optimized for the Model A025 to provide outstanding anti-reflective performance and effectively suppress ghosting and flare. The eBAND coating delivers clear, crisp images even when shooting portraits in backlit conditions.
- Newly adopted dustproof and drip-proof construction
The lens barrel is sealed at the various switches and the boundary between the focus ring and lens barrel to provide a high level of dustproof and drip-proof construction that can withstand the harsh shooting conditions in the field. The new construction provides a higher level of protection against dust, dirt, and water droplets than the simplified drip-proof construction of previous models.
- Tripod mount compatible with Arca Swiss Quick Shoe for improved sense of unity
A newly designed tripod mount compatible with Arca Swiss compatible quick shoe, which is known for its ease of attachment and removal as well as stability. The design is highly integrated with the optical tube, which enhances convenience and robustness when using a tripod.
- Electromagnetic diaphragm system for Nikon lenses
The electromagnetic diaphragm system, in which the aperture blades are driven and controlled by a motor built into the lens body, has been adopted for Nikon (*3) lenses. This enables more precise aperture drive.
