Product Features
Ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that achieves the world's widest angle(*1)
- Four aspherical lenses, including the world's largest diameter ground aspherical lens with an outer diameter of φ87mm, are used to achieve the world's widest angle of view with a focal length of 11mm. The shooting range is more than twice as wide as that of the 16mm focal length, which is considered an ultra-wide angle.
- When shooting at the wide-angle end, the camera covers a horizontal angle of view of 117° and a diagonal angle of view of 126°, making it possible to capture most of the human field of view in a single shot.
*1: As an interchangeable lens for interchangeable lens cameras (SLR cameras and mirrorless cameras). (Canon research) Excluding fisheye lenses.
Canon's unique optical technology for ultra-wide angle and high image quality
- The optical system consists of 16 elements in 11 groups and employs four aspherical lenses, including a large-diameter ground aspherical lens. The world's widest focal length(*2), high image quality at the periphery of the image, and minimal distortion when shooting at the wide-angle end are achieved.
- The large-diameter ground aspherical lens reduces the diameter of the front-most lens to φ87mm, which is large for an ultra-wide-angle lens, and prevents it from becoming larger.
- The first EF lens series to use Canon's proprietary Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) on two surfaces, which significantly suppresses flare and ghosting.
- ASC (Air Sphere Coating), a newly developed coating unique to Canon, is employed to provide significant anti-reflection effect equivalent to SWC for light incident at near-vertical angles.
- The world's largest glass-molded aspherical lens is used for the second lens to correct distortion.
- The 3rd and 16th lenses are also glass-molded aspherical lenses to correct image curvature and achieve high image quality on the periphery of the image.
- Super UD and UD lenses are used for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. Effectively corrects lateral chromatic aberration, which tends to occur with ultra-wide-angle lenses.
*2: Aspherical lenses used in interchangeable lenses for interchangeable lens cameras (SLR cameras and mirrorless cameras), as of February 6, 2015. (As of February 6, 2015.)
High reliability worthy of the L-lens series
- The mechanical structure has been optimized to ensure smooth and highly precise operation of the heavy first group lens, achieving high durability.
- The lens barrel is resistant to vibration and shock as well as to repetitive zooming movements, making it highly durable and robust even under severe shooting conditions.
- Dustproof and drip-proof construction on the mount, switch panel, zoom ring, and focus ring
- Fluorine coating is applied to the front and rear lens surfaces to prevent oil and water droplets from adhering to them.
