Four ED lenses and four aspherical lenses are used to achieve superior optical performance. The lens delivers sharp resolution from infinity to close range, from the maximum aperture to the periphery of the image. The lens also features low image distortion throughout the entire zoom range for an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, excellent image reproduction from the maximum aperture, and high backlight resistance thanks to the use of nano crystal coatings and careful consideration of optical design.

For the first time in the world*, Nikon FX format (full-frame) compatible lenses are ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses with a focal length starting at 14mm, allowing filters to be attached directly to the tip of the lens.
This allows users to enjoy the effects of PL filters, ND filters, and other filters that were previously unavailable. Furthermore, since the front-most surface of the lens can be protected with filters and hoods, combined with the dustproof and drip-proof design, users can engage in active camera work with peace of mind.

While maintaining the minimum length and dimensions necessary to achieve excellent optical performance, a lightweight body weighing approximately 485g has been designed with a retractable body mechanism for easy portability. The retractable body mechanism is button-less, and the zoom ring can be rotated to retract or release the retractable body. Compared to a retractable body mechanism, which requires button operation, the retractable body mechanism offers superior speed and high mobility.

- Various Considerations for Smooth Image Expression
Focus breathing, which causes the angle of view to change as the focus position shifts during focusing, is suppressed. Each control ring is smooth to operate, enabling smooth image expression with fluctuations in focus and brightness. In addition, smooth and flicker-free aperture control ensures that changes in brightness are natural.

- Control Ring for Quiet Shooting Operation
The control ring can be assigned either [M/A]* [aperture value] or [exposure compensation] from the camera. The smooth feel of the control ring allows for smooth and quiet shooting operations for video and still images.
By rotating the control ring, you can use the functions set by the camera in AF mode, or manually adjust the focus in MF mode.

More advanced lens design guidelines and more detailed lens data acquired through high-speed, large-volume communications enable even more precise AF control regardless of whether the subject is moving or still images. The use of a stepping motor (STM), which is quiet and responsive, enables silent operation of the AF mechanism. This enables extremely quiet movie shooting.
