The 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a large-aperture ultra-wide-angle zoom lens developed based on the concept of a "high-performance compact zoom. The lens covers an ultra-wide angle of 16mm and is as bright as F2.8, yet the latest optical design technology has optimized the lens configuration to boldly realize high optical performance and a compact, lightweight lens body. The image curvature has been corrected with emphasis on situations where ultra wide-angle lenses are used, and the lens has been designed to deliver high performance with sharpness all the way to the periphery. In addition, a front filter can be attached to the lens for landscape and other shooting scenarios. The inner zoom lens, which does not change its overall length when zooming, ensures outstanding portability and stable operability. This lens is ideal for mountain photography, where weight reduction is a serious requirement, and for travel, where footwork is important. The lens offers all the features expected of a large-aperture zoom lens, including high-definition imaging, a pocketable size, and usability. - Uncompromising optical performance in a compact body
The 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary was developed as a "high-performance compact zoom lens" that packs uncompromising optical performance into a lightweight, compact lens body. The lens configuration has been optimized through a short flange back and the latest optical design that takes into account the optical correction function on the camera side, achieving both high optical performance and a compact body.
In particular, the two large-aperture aspherical lens elements on the front surface contribute to the compactness of the entire lens and the realization of high optical performance. Five FLD glass elements, which have the same characteristics as fluorite, are employed and optimally positioned to effectively suppress lateral and axial chromatic aberrations, which are particularly problematic with ultra-wide-angle lenses. When shooting landscapes and architecture, where ultra-wide-angle lenses are most useful, you can enjoy sharp, even images and beautiful bokeh from the center to the edges of the image. In close-up photography, the f/2.8 lens can create images with a three-dimensional feel by taking advantage of the background blur that only an f/2.8 lens can produce. Since the sun tends to penetrate into the image and cause ghosting and flare in ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses, the lens was designed with sufficient measures in place from the design stage. Super Multi-Layer Coating provides excellent backlighting performance.

The 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary can be fitted with a Φ72mm front filter. A stepping motor is used as the AF actuator. The agile and quiet AF is ideal for both still and moving image shooting. The inner zoom maintains its compactness by maintaining the same overall length even when the focal length is changed, and since there is almost no center of gravity shift, it is an advantage in hand-held shooting, gimbal shooting, and vlog shooting, where stability and mobility are required. The inner zoom also contributes to a compact size that is no longer on par with the F4 class, with an overall length of 102.6 mm, a maximum diameter of 77.2 mm, and a weight of only 450 g*. When combined with the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary of the same "F2.8 zoom series," an extremely compact system can be assembled that covers the entire range from ultra-wide angle to medium telephoto with a total weight of only 920g.

Polycarbonate TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has a thermal shrinkage rate similar to that of aluminum, is used in all the right places. This reduces errors caused by thermal contraction with metal parts and ensures stable performance even in environments with large temperature fluctuations.
