Apochromatic correction
When the glass components that make up the optical system in a lens refract light, the refractive index differs depending on the color. As a result, light consisting of multiple colors does not come into focus at a single point. This causes chromatic aberration. To reduce this chromatic aberration to an almost unrecognizable level, the new Leica Apo-Zmicron SL lens features apochromatic correction. This is the origin of the “apo” in the lens' name. The optical system consists of 11 lenses, most of which are made of high-precision, high-quality special glass with anomalous partial dispersion characteristics. One aspherical lens is also used.

Stray light and reflected light reduction
In the development process, the reduction of stray light and reflected light was one of the most important issues to be addressed. As a result, we optimized the design of the optical system and mechanism and applied high-quality coatings to the lens surfaces to minimize reflections.

High-speed autofocus
The autofocus mechanism uses a highly powerful and durable stepping motor with Dual Syncro Drive (DSD). This enables high-speed autofocusing in about 0.25 sec.
