Product Features
The first large aperture monofocal lens to employ Canon's proprietary "BR Lens".
- Thoroughly suppresses chromatic aberration through the use of the newly developed "BR lens" optical element
The BR lens* is a composite lens consisting of a concave and convex glass lens sandwiching a BR optical element with anomalous dispersion characteristics that significantly refracts blue (short wavelength range) light, enabling extremely excellent chromatic aberration correction. This enables more ideal correction of chromatic aberration in large-aperture lenses, which has been difficult to achieve in the past.
(*The "BR Lens" (Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics) is characterized by its ability to significantly refract blue light (in the short wavelength range), enabling an even higher level of chromatic aberration correction.)
- New optical system including "BR Lens" realizes overwhelmingly high image quality
In addition to the newly developed "BR Lens," two aspherical lenses including one Canon-developed ground aspherical lens and one UD lens are used to achieve high image quality from the center of the image to the periphery even when the aperture is wide open. In addition, Canon's proprietary Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which has an excellent anti-reflective effect on light entering the lens at particularly wide angles, is applied to achieve high image quality with minimal flare and ghosting.
- High durability and vibration/shock resistance for high reliability
The mechanical structure inside the lens barrel has been redesigned to achieve high durability and vibration/shock resistance, and the mount, switch, and focus ring are dustproof and drip-proofed to ensure high reliability in harsh shooting conditions. The front and rear surfaces of the lens are coated with a fluorine coating to prevent water droplets and oil from adhering, and can be easily wiped clean with a dry cloth.
- Basic Photographic Performance Improved from Conventional Models
The minimum focusing distance has been shortened from 0.3m to 0.28m, and the maximum magnification has been increased from 0.18x to 0.21x. Even though the lens is a wide-angle lens, it allows photographers to close up small subjects and take advantage of the bokeh effect to create photographic expression. In addition, the 9-blade circular diaphragm allows for the rendering of point light sources in the background in a more beautiful, almost circular shape.
