Compact and lightweight design

Image stabilization effect of 5 stops in terms of shutter speed

- The latest microprocessor provides a 5-step shutter speed equivalent image stabilization effect, which is the highest among Canon lenses.

When shooting still images, the lens is compatible with Dual Sensing IS, which provides image stabilization for large shakes, such as those caused by body shaking. The RF mount inherits the large 54mm aperture of the EF mount while downsizing the camera. It also features a new short back focus. This allows the lens to be positioned close to the image pickup surface, enabling a high degree of freedom in optical design. This has enabled the development of the RF28-70mm F2 L USM, a zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2, and the RF50mm F1.2 L USM, which is extremely sharp from the maximum aperture, both of which were impossible to commercialize in the EF mount from a practical standpoint.

The number of electronic contacts at the mount connection has been increased from 8 to 12 on the EF mount. The communication speed has been greatly improved (new mount communication system). When shooting still images, the Dual Sensing IS function detects the amount of camera shake based on image information from the camera's CMOS sensor in addition to the lens sensor, and compensates for camera shake even more powerfully. This system detects and compensates for camera shake that cannot be detected by the IS on the lens with high precision, achieving an image stabilization effect of up to 5 stops.
