The 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a standard zoom lens that redefines the conventional wisdom by combining high optical performance, brightness through F2.8, and a lightweight, compact lens body.
Based on the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art, the lens body has been made significantly smaller and lighter by designing the wide-angle side from 28mm, while maintaining high optical performance. It is the smallest and lightest in its class*. In the concept of the Contemporary line, which pursues the best possible balance, the lens achieves a high level of compatibility between two generally contradictory elements: the high definition expected of a large-aperture zoom lens and a size that makes it easy to carry around.
Even while emphasizing portability, the various coatings and mechanisms required for standard zoom lenses, which are expected to be used in all kinds of shooting environments, have been carefully examined and reconfigured. In terms of manufacturing, we have also ensured high build quality as a product.

- Designed based on Art line lenses, uncompromising optical performance
The optics of the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary are designed based on the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens, which offers excellent optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. The wide-angle side of the lens is designed from 28mm. By designing the wide-angle side of the lens from 28mm, a compact and lightweight design was achieved while maintaining the same high optical performance as the Art line.
While reducing the number of lens elements, the lens is based on the latest optical design technology and uses a wealth of special glass materials, including three aspherical lenses, two FLD elements, and two SLD elements, to thoroughly correct axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma aberration, which cannot be corrected by the camera's own functions. This allows the photographer to enjoy a crisp, even image from the center to the edges of the image.
In addition to a design that takes ghosting into consideration, the lens features Super Multi-Layer Coating and Nano-Porous Coating to achieve excellent backlighting performance. The front of the lens also features a water and stain repellent coating.
The Contemporary line offers the optimum balance of performance required of a large-aperture standard zoom lens, which is designed for a wide variety of subjects and shooting environments.

- Lightweight and compactness that enables regular use of large-aperture zoom lenses
The 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art has succeeded in significantly downsizing the lens body by narrowing the zoom range at the wide-angle side. Furthermore, the design concept of the Contemporary line, which pursues the best balance of simplified dust-proof and drip-proof construction and minimized switches, has resulted in the smallest and lightest* lens body in its class.
The focus unit has also been downsized by using a single focus lens. At the same time, the combination of a lightweight focus lens and a stepping motor enables quiet and comfortable autofocusing.
The lens itself weighs 470g, and when mounted on the SIGMA fp, the total weight is approximately 890g, giving photographers the freedom to use large-aperture zoom lenses on a regular basis, as they weigh less than 1kg as a photographic system. Furthermore, this lightweight, easy-to-maneuver shooting system is also compatible with gimbals and other peripheral equipment, making it ideal for video production.

- High build quality with consideration to the feel of operation
The lens body, which is designed for portability, is composed mainly of lightweight plastic parts. Plastic parts are generally considered more difficult to process than metal parts, but the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary does not compromise on build quality in any way.
Polycarbonate TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has a thermal shrinkage rate similar to that of aluminum, is used in appropriate places. This reduces the error caused by thermal contraction with metal parts, ensuring stable performance even in environments with large temperature fluctuations. In addition, the control ring, which tends to have a rough turning feel when sliding between plastic parts, is adjusted with grease to achieve a moist, high-quality operating feel after enhancing the precision of the parts.
