Product Features
The best single-focal length lens for reportage photography is now available.
Compatible with the Leica SL system and other L-mount systems.
The Leica Apo Summicron SL f2/35mm ASPH. is a lens that delivers unparalleled descriptive power through innovative manufacturing methods and new technologies, setting a new standard for lenses with the optimum focal length for reportage photography. The lens mount uses the L-mount, a standard developed by Leica, and is therefore compatible with L-mount cameras made by manufacturers participating in the L-mount Alliance.
The lens is also ideal for shooting in low-light situations, as it delivers outstanding descriptive performance even when the aperture is wide open. The optical system uses a total of 13 lenses with extremely complex shapes. This enables the SL lenses to deliver the exceptional image quality that only Leica can: natural skin tones, soft bokeh, high contrast with fine details, and sharp images without distortion, even at the periphery. In addition, SL lenses can be used practically even with the aperture fully open, so the only time you need to stop down the aperture is when you want to change the impression of the picture, not when you want to improve the image quality.
Lenses and other glass components that make up the optical system refract light, but the refractive index varies depending on the color. Therefore, light consisting of multiple colors does not come into focus at a single point. This causes chromatic aberration. To minimize this chromatic aberration, apochromatic correction is applied. For apochromatic correction, high-quality special glass with abnormal partial dispersion characteristics is used for most of the 13 lenses that make up the optical system. These lenses are manufactured using innovative methods that break through the technical limitations of the lens manufacturing methods previously employed in Leica factories. Five aspherical lenses are also used.
In terms of manufacturing and development, these lenses are state-of-the-art lenses that are a further evolution of the conventional SL lenses. In terms of manufacturing and development, the SL lenses are state-of-the-art and represent a further evolution of the existing SL lenses. This has resulted in a more compact and significantly lighter body, as well as improved descriptive performance. During development, we also focused on reducing stray light and reflections as one of the most important issues. As a result, we optimized the design of the optical system and mechanism and applied high-quality coatings to the lens surfaces to minimize reflections. In addition, the lens is sealed to effectively prevent water droplets and dust from entering the lens, and the front lens surface is coated with Leica Aqua Dura coating to ensure safe use in all weather conditions.
The autofocus mechanism uses an extremely powerful and durable stepping motor with DSD (Dual Syncro Drive). This enables high-speed autofocusing in approximately 0.25 seconds. Leica's innovative technical capabilities are not only applied to autofocusing, but also to manual focusing. The focus ring for manual focusing is equipped with a ring-shaped magnet whose magnetic poles can be reversed. When the focus ring is turned, the magnetic poles of the magnet flip, which is detected by the sensor and transmitted to the main processor. Based on this information, the focus position is adjusted based on the amount and speed of rotation of the focus ring. This enables manual focusing at higher speeds and with higher precision than ever before.
