Product Features

This camera has the same image processing engine and sensor as the D500, a high-end Nikon DX format model, but is smaller and lighter than the D500. This camera is recommended for users who do not require all the features of the flagship model, but want to enjoy the same image quality as the flagship model at a reasonable price.

The EXPEED 5 image processing engine is the same as that used in the D500 and delivers superior image processing performance. By processing data read from the Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor at high speed, the EXPEED 5 delivers high-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 8 frames per second and 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p video. Noise is effectively reduced even at high sensitivities, resulting in sharp images with a sense of sharpness down to the smallest detail. Delicate gradations can be smoothly reproduced in both still images and movies.

- ISO100-51200 normal sensitivity that greatly expands the shooting range for still images and movies
The combination of the high-performance EXPEED 5 image processing engine and CMOS sensor extends the normal sensitivity to ISO 100-51200. Noise reduction in the high-sensitivity range has also been improved, resulting in sharp, low-noise images even in dark conditions that were difficult to photograph in the past. In addition, the sensitivity can be reduced to Lo1 (equivalent to ISO 50) and increased to Hi5 (equivalent to ISO 164,000). Combined with high performance metering and AF performance that can cope with low-light conditions, the camera enables shooting in a wide variety of scenes.

The camera is equipped with the same image sensor as the Nikon DX format flagship model D500. The effective pixel count is 20.88 megapixels. The sensor maintains resolution while providing an optimal balance of noise reduction, resulting in outstanding descriptive performance even at high sensitivities. Furthermore, the synergy between the resolving power of the optical low-pass filter-less specification and the overwhelming optical performance of the NIKKOR lens delivers images that are sharp to the very last detail.

High-speed data readout from the image sensor and high-speed processing by the high-performance EXPEED 5 image processing engine enable high-speed continuous shooting at a maximum of approximately 8 frames per second(*1). In addition, the camera has a large buffer memory capacity, enabling continuous shooting of up to 50 frames even with 14-bit lossless compressed RAW, and up to 100 frames with JPEG (picture quality mode: FINE, image size: L) (*2). Combined with the bright, time-lag-free optical viewfinder with a field of view of approximately 100% using a glass pentaprism, the camera captures the subject's brightest moment with even greater certainty.
*1: When AF mode is set to AF-C, shooting mode is set to S (shutter priority auto) or M (manual), shutter speed is set to 1/250 sec. or faster, and other settings are set to default.

The D500's metering sensor, the 180K pixel RGB sensor (approx. 180,000 pixels), improves the performance of the Advanced Scene Recognition System. By linking the information on the shooting scene obtained from the huge number of pixels, the system enhances the accuracy of automatic control functions such as AF, AE, and auto white balance.

The camera can record movies of up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds(*) in 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p. The camera's high-performance EXPEED 5 image processing engine and NIKKOR lenses' outstanding image rendering capabilities enable the capture of sharp, detailed images, and the wide sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 51200 and Hi5 (equivalent to ISO 1640000) allows the camera to handle a wider variety of scenes. In addition to the conventional MOV format, the new MP4 format is easy to play back on smartphones and other devices. AAC is also supported as the audio recording format. In addition, simultaneous output to HDMI enables display on an external monitor and recording of uncompressed video to an external recorder.
*Movies are recorded in up to 8 separate files. The maximum file size for each file is 4 GB.
