An entry-level ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that is both compact and lightweight with high image quality, employing an optical system suitable for APS-C size image sensors.

The newly developed optical system, which consists of two aspherical lenses and one UD (special low-dispersion glass) lens, and especially the high-precision large-aperture plastic-molded aspherical lens, enables the lens to be both compact and lightweight, and to deliver high image quality.

This is the first ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with IS (Image Stabilization System) for EF-S lenses, which further expands the shooting range when shooting magnificent landscapes with a wide angle of view or taking snapshots indoors where distance from the subject is difficult.

- The use of two aspherical lens elements provides excellent correction of various aberrations, such as image curvature, and achieves high image rendering performance.

- The UD lens delivers sharp and clear high image quality with minimal color shift to the periphery.

- The first wide-angle zoom lens in the EF-S lens series to incorporate an IS (Image Stabilization System), providing an image stabilization effect equivalent to 4 stops in shutter speed (*Focal length 18mm (equivalent to 29mm in 35mm format), when used with the EOS 7D, based on CIPA standards). The camera is capable of capturing the unique expression of slow shutter speeds, such as the flow of a river or the light trails of a car's lights.

- The 7-blade circular aperture produces beautiful bokeh out-of-focus effects.

- The newly designed 4-group zoom lens and high-precision large-aperture plastic-molded aspherical lens enable a compact size. Weighing only 240g, it is easy to carry around with you.

- Compared to the current ultra-wide-angle zoom lens "EF-S10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM," the new lens is approximately 20% smaller in overall length and 38% lighter in weight.
