- Special low-dispersion glass and nano-porous coating* deliver high image quality

Proper arrangement of 1 FLD glass and 5 SLD glass elements suppresses chromatic aberration all the way to the periphery of the image. Three aspherical lens elements, including a large aspherical element at the front-most surface, are used to effectively suppress coma aberration and other aberrations, while also achieving an overwhelming sense of resolution. In addition to the Super Multi-Layer Coating, a newly developed nano-porous coating* is used. This coating is designed to minimize the effects of strong incident light, such as backlighting.

*Nano Porous Coating (NPC), a new coating technology unique to Sigma, uses porous silica as the coating material. The porous silica layer forms nano-sized holes that contain air inside. The presence of holes of this size makes it possible to significantly lower the refractive index and thus the reflectivity compared to conventional antireflective coatings. As a result, reflected light, which causes flare and ghosting, is greatly reduced, resulting in clear and crisp image quality.

The use of a stepping motor enables both high-speed AF drive and quiet operation.
