An in-lens image stabilization mechanism has been incorporated to further enhance image stabilization performance in the ultra-telephoto range. Combined with the OM-D E-M1 Ver. 4.0 / E-M5 Mark II Ver. 2.0, the new "5-axis Synchro Image Stabilization" technology takes advantage of the merits of both the in-body and in-lens image stabilization mechanisms and coordinates them.
This technology provides the world's most powerful 6-step (*1) image stabilization performance, making it a revolutionary image stabilization system that enables hand-held shooting at a 35mm film format equivalent of 600mm. The in-lens image stabilization system alone provides a correction performance of 4 stops (*2), making this super-telephoto lens usable by users of other bodies as well.

Because super-telephoto lenses are large and heavy, it has been common practice to use a tripod or monopod for shooting. Compared to a 35mm full-size 600mm F4.0 lens, the Olympus 600mm F4.0 lens weighs 1270g (excluding the tripod mount), less than 1/3 the weight, and is 227mm (ø92.5mm), less than 1/2 the length, making it compact and lightweight. Places where you used to hesitate to bring in a tripod or monopod because you could not use them will become new shooting scenes. Hand-held shooting of wild birds, animals, sports, etc. can be done with greater freedom. The camera also reduces the risk of carrying the camera and telephoto lens in the cabin when traveling by air.
Despite its small size, the camera is dustproof and drip-proof with 17 sealed locations, as well as -10°C low-temperature resistance. Combined with the OM-D E-M1/E-M5 Mark II, which has the same dust and drip-proofing and low temperature resistance, it can be used in any weather and location for shooting.
The MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism allows for quiet AF operation, making it ideal for use in combination with the OM-D's quiet mode for piano recitals and other noiseless situations.

- Highest resolution in Olympus history, surpassing super high-grade lenses
The highest resolution ever achieved by Olympus, surpassing the Super High Grade (SHG) lenses of the Four Thirds system, which have been well-received as high-resolution lenses. The luxurious use of special lenses, including three difficult-to-process Super ED lenses, one E-HR (special high refractive index) lens, and three HR (high refractive index) lenses, ensures high resolution performance while minimizing color blur and chromatic aberration, which are issues with super-telephoto lenses. In addition, the lens combines high resolution with a compact size by using a "high-precision large-aperture lens" and a "thin glass polished lens," both of which were achieved by combining Olympus' optical design and manufacturing technologies.
In addition, a new coating technology, "Z Coating Nano," has been developed to significantly reduce ghosting and flare in backlit and other situations, and to achieve a clear, bright image. This new coating technology is effective when shooting with strong light sources in the frame.
By using the dedicated teleconverter "M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 1.4x Teleconverter MC-14" with this lens, the lens can be used as a 35mm format equivalent 840mm lens with high resolution.

- High-speed, high-precision AF in combination with "OM-D E-M1/E-M5 Mark II

- Tele Macro function allows you to get as close as 1.15m (minimum focus distance 1.4m) from the tip of the lens. With a maximum magnification of 0.48x (35mm film camera equivalent), this function is very effective for shooting flowers and insects.

- Manual focus clutch mechanism that switches to manual focus by pulling the focus ring toward you. The barrel is also equipped with a focus limit switch (4m to ∞, full range, 1.4 to 4m), an IS switch (ON/OFF), and an L-Fn button, allowing you to change settings without leaving the camera.
