The name "Plena" is derived from the Latin word "plenum," meaning a space that is full of space, and is reminiscent of the brightness of the ocean at high tide, and of a person's heart being full of life. It is reminiscent of the brightness of the sea at high tide and the fullness of a person's heart. Plena is Nikon's most advanced lens, with a focus on the shape and quality of the bokeh effect throughout the entire image plane, creating a fantastic expression in which the entire image is filled with light and the "brilliance of the subject" and "beautiful bokeh" are in harmony.

By optimizing the lens configuration, a highly circular bokeh shape is achieved from a maximum aperture of 1.8. The use of SR and ED lenses suppresses coloration at the edges of the bokeh and produces a large, soft bokeh effect. The soft bokeh, which smoothly increases in size as it moves away from the focus plane, and its gradation accentuates the three-dimensionality of subjects such as people.

Nikon's unique Mesoamorphous Coat and Arneo Coat are used to produce clear images even in backlit conditions. Furthermore, the multi-focus system with multiple STMs (stepping motors) provides fast and highly accurate AF. The camera captures the subject in sharp focus even when shooting at close range or when shooting moving subjects.

The flicker-free aperture control also allows for smooth brightness changes.
