This is a standard zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture of 2.8 and a focal length of 24-70mm (when attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera, the focal length is equivalent to 36-105mm in the FX-format, 35mm format equivalent shooting angle), equipped with a VR mechanism. The latest optical design pursues world-class image quality and is newly equipped with a VR mechanism with a 4.0-stop image stabilization effect (*) (in accordance with CIPA standards). The lens is also highly robust for hard usage environments. Covering a focal range from wide-angle to mid-telephoto, the lens can be used in a wide variety of scenes, including news reporting, advertising, sports, fashion, bridal, and landscapes. The AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR employs an optical system with well-balanced optical performance that allows for the ultimate pursuit of image quality, including an ED aspherical lens, the first NIKKOR lens to employ such a lens, as well as ED lenses, aspherical lenses, and high-refraction index (HRI) lenses to effectively correct chromatic aberration and various other aberrations. The latest optical design effectively corrects chromatic aberration and various aberrations in pursuit of the best image quality. With higher resolving power than conventional products (*), the lens provides sharp, high-contrast images right to the periphery of the image. With a large aperture and a maximum aperture of 2.8, you can enjoy natural and soft bokeh that is even more beautiful. The Nano Crystal Coating provides clear images with little ghosting or flare even in backlit conditions.

- ED Aspherical Lens" for both chromatic aberration correction and various types of aberration correction
The ED aspherical lens is made of ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, which effectively reduces chromatic aberration, and has a curved surface on one or both sides that is not spherical. The use of ED glass and an aspheric surface allows the aberration-correcting effect of an ED aspheric lens to be achieved with a single ED aspheric lens, contributing to a more compact lens.

The lens is equipped with a VR mechanism that was not available in previous products (*1). This mechanism effectively reduces blurring of the image and viewfinder image caused by camera shake, which tends to occur when shooting hand-held at dusk or in dark scenes. The VR performance has been improved immediately after the camera is turned on, providing a stable viewfinder image and an image with minimal blurring immediately after the start of shooting. In addition, the layout inside the lens barrel has been improved to combine high optical performance with a VR mechanism while taking advantage of the slim lens barrel design. ［In NORMAL mode, the image stabilization effect is as high as 4.0 stops (*2) (in accordance with CIPA standards), allowing the photographer to take pictures without being affected by camera shake even at shutter speeds 4.0 stops slower than the maximum speed at which he or she can take pictures without camera shake, thereby expanding the range of photographic expression. The camera also supports tripod shooting(*3), which automatically produces sharp images with reduced tripod shake even when VR is turned on.

Improvements to the SWM (Silent Wave Motor = ultrasonic motor) and algorithms have resulted in higher AF speed and AF accuracy compared to previous products(*). The fast and accurate AF enables quick focusing that captures the subject instantly, meeting the demanding needs of professionals. In addition, an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism is used for the aperture system. The aperture of the lens is controlled by electrical signals from the body, enabling stable exposure control during high-speed continuous shooting.
