Product Features
A large-aperture lens with a maximum aperture of f/2 across the entire zoom range, made possible by the EOS R system.
Large-aperture standard zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F/2 that delivers outstanding image quality
- The lens consists of 19 elements in 13 groups, including two ground aspherical lenses, two glass molded aspherical lenses, one super UD lens, and two UD lenses made of special optical materials, to achieve a maximum aperture of F2 across the entire zoom range, providing outstanding image quality at a wide range of focal lengths from 28mm to 70mm.
- By adopting the RF mount, a large-aperture standard zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/2 across the entire zoom range was developed, which was difficult to achieve with the conventional EF lens series. The lens contributes to the expansion of users' shooting range as a lens with a constant maximum aperture f-number across the entire zoom range, which is easy to set and adjust exposure and is in persistent demand among professionals and high-amateurs.
- The short back focus and large aperture mount allow a large-aperture lens to be placed close to the sensor surface, contributing to further improvement of peripheral image quality.
- At maximum aperture (F value 2), the lens delivers image quality equivalent or superior to that of the "EF24-70mm F2.8L II USM" (released in September 2012) at maximum aperture (F value 2.8).
- Although it is a zoom lens, it delivers image rendering performance approaching that of a single focal length lens. The lens covers a focal length range of 28mm to 70mm, making it possible to use a single lens in situations where a single focal length lens was previously required.
Two types of special coatings are used to achieve even higher image quality
- Two of Canon's original special coatings, SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating) and ASC (Air Sphere Coating), are used. The use of Canon's proprietary technologies reduces flare and ghosting, which are caused by light reflections in the lens, in the captured image to achieve even higher image quality.
- The special SWC coating suppresses light reflection by arranging a myriad of nano-sized wedge-shaped structures on the lens surface that are smaller than the wavelength of visible light.
- The special coating "ASC" suppresses light reflection by forming a film containing silicon dioxide and air on top of the film that is deposited on the lens surface. Air, which has a lower refractive index than optical glass, is included in the coating at a certain rate to form a film with an ultra-low refractive index. Significant anti-reflection effect is achieved.
