Product Features
This compact lens boasts high descriptive performance and is ideal for snapshots.
From the maximum aperture of F1.8, the lens delivers clear, crisp, and sharp image performance throughout the entire image range.
- High resolution and high performance combined with compact size
The lens is composed of nine elements in six groups, including three aspherical lenses, including a DSA (double-sided aspheric with large eccentricity) lens, which helps effectively correct various aberrations and reduce lens size but requires high-precision manufacturing technology due to the extremely large thickness ratio between the center and the periphery of the lens, and one HR (high refractive index) lens with high spherical aberration correction capability. The lens is composed of nine elements in six groups. The well-balanced arrangement of these lenses has realized excellent image quality with high contrast, sharpness, and fluidity from the wide-angle 17mm (equivalent to 34mm in 35mm format), F1.8 maximum aperture to the entire image range, with a maximum diameter of 57.5mm × 35.5mm overall length and a weight of only 120g.
- ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) Coating
In order to thoroughly eliminate ghosting and flare, which have been difficult to prevent in the past, Olympus has applied its proprietary ZERO coating to the lens surface to reduce reflectance at wavelengths between 450 and 650 nm by half, ensuring clear, transparent imaging performance even under backlighting and other adverse conditions. This coating technology is the result of Olympus' thin-film control technology cultivated through its microscope multilayer film deposition technology. The coating is vacuum-deposited to ensure high film strength and resistance to scratches and deterioration, while at the same time maintaining its low reflection properties.
- Large aperture F1.8 brightness and in-body image stabilization system for darkroom photography
When taking hand-held snapshots in dark scenes, it is usually very difficult to take blur-free photos without a tripod or flash. The new “M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F1.8” is a wide-angle lens with a large F1.8 aperture, and all Olympus “OM-D” and “PEN” series models have a built-in image stabilization mechanism, greatly expanding the range of possible darkroom shooting. This makes it possible to easily take blur-free photos not only in low-light environments such as dusk or indoors, but also in places where a tripod cannot be used such as sightseeing spots or busy places, or where flash is prohibited such as zoos and aquariums.
- Equipped with the “MSC mechanism” for fast and quiet autofocus operation
The inner-focusing system employs the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism, which realizes fast and quiet focusing with a lightweight and small number of lens elements. This enables fast, quiet, and smooth autofocus movement. This smooth autofocus operation allows for stress-free and comfortable shooting of both still images and movies.
- Snapshot Focus Mechanism” that allows the focus point to be set at a specified distance
Sliding the focus ring toward you moves the focus to a specified distance, and rotating the focus ring moves the focus position to the distance scale engraved on the lens barrel. By using this mechanism, it is possible to instantly take pan-focus shots in which the subject is in focus from the foreground to the background, or to shoot by eye, making snapshots even more enjoyable and lighthear
