The 24.32 effective megapixel Nikon FX format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 image processing engine cover a wide normal sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 51200. Even when shooting in dark places, the sensor can render images with reduced noise while expressing texture and detail. The camera is also equipped with in-body Vibration Reduction (VR), which compensates for camera shake by driving the image stabilization unit on five axes to provide a highly effective shutter speed of 5.0 stops. In addition, Hybrid VR combined with the "Electronic SteadyShot Image Stabilization" function exclusively for movie shooting provides a high image stabilization effect even during movie shooting, enabling stable shooting.
In addition, a total of 20 types of "Creative Picture Control" are available for creative expression. The "Creative Picture Control" can also be applied during movie recording, including 4K UHD movie recording.

- Pupil AF, Animal AF, and a 273-point Hybrid AF system for shooting on target
The camera is equipped with a hybrid AF system that automatically switches between image phase detection AF and contrast AF. With 273 focus points covering approximately 90% of the image capture area horizontally and vertically, the system can easily focus on subjects on the periphery of the image. The camera is also equipped with "Pupil AF" and "Animal AF" to track the eyes of moving people, dogs and cats with high accuracy, allowing the photographer to concentrate on communicating with the subject and composing the image without being distracted by focus point operations. Multiple pupils are detected not only during live-view shooting but also during viewfinder shooting, and can be easily selected with the multi-selector or sub-selector while shooting. During movie recording, animal faces can be detected in addition to human faces. In addition, the camera supports AF shooting down to -3EV* to capture the subject firmly even in low-light conditions.

The electronic viewfinder with approximately 3.69 million dots provides the natural and sharp view that has been the hallmark of the "Z series" and allows users to check every corner of the screen in fine detail. The tiltable 3.2-inch TFT LCD monitor features a touch panel for intuitive operation during AF, release, and shooting setting changes. The newly developed Li-ion rechargeable battery EN-EL15c has an increased capacity and can take approximately 470 shots (*when monitor mode is set to "monitor only"). In addition to conventional USB recharging, the EN-EL15c is also newly compatible with USB power supply when the power is turned on, allowing users to concentrate on shooting even when shooting long videos, including time-lapse photography. It also supports the SnapBridge app for transferring still images and videos to smart devices and remote control.

The Z series is equipped with a double slot that allows the use of two UHS-II compliant SD cards. By loading a memory card in both slots, you can use [Sequential Recording], [Backup Recording], or [Split Recording of RAW + JPEG], depending on your purpose, for efficient recording of captured images. Images can also be copied between cards. When shooting movies, a card with sufficient free space can be designated as the recording destination. The same images stored on two cards for backup recording or split recording can be deleted simultaneously with a single operation, contributing to further acceleration of the workflow.
