Product Features

The Leica Summilux M f1.5/90mm ASPH. is a lens that allows creative expression in a variety of genres. For example, in portrait photography, the depth of field can be made shallow so that only the subject stands out, or the sharpness of the subject can be softly blurred out to the background. The optical design of this lens is so outstanding that it sets a new standard, and it delivers high descriptive power from the widest aperture. The focal length is 90mm, which can be considered a medium telephoto lens and is ideal for portrait photography. With a maximum aperture of f/1.5, it is bright enough to handle steady light. The short minimum focus distance also allows the photographer to get very close to the subject to capture details.

The optical design is extremely complex, consisting of eight elements in six groups, two of which are aspherical lenses made of special glass. In addition, a floating system is used. It was extremely difficult to incorporate the floating system into the compact body structure, but as a result of its introduction, it was possible to consistently achieve overwhelmingly high image quality over the entire shooting distance. In addition, aperture erosion and distortion, which cannot be avoided with brighter lenses, have been suppressed to the point where they are not a problem at all on a practical level. The lens hood is built-in and can be quickly and easily pulled out and secured in place.

With a minimum focusing distance of 1 m and a maximum magnification of 1:8.8, it is particularly well suited for portrait photography. 90 mm is extremely bright for a medium telephoto lens, and its optical design and construction are very similar to the "Leica Noctilux M f1.25/75 mm ASPH. The depth of field is also very shallow, only half that of the Leica Noctilux M f0.95/50mm ASPH.

These unique performances are not only due to the materials used for the lenses and other components of the optical system, but also to the high-precision manufacturing and assembly processes. This ensures high durability and preserves the value of the lens for many years to come. The extremely smooth focusing action and bokeh control are also made possible by the high-precision adjustment and assembly of the optical system. The ability to create an extremely shallow depth of field to highlight the main subject and a focal length that allows shooting from a reasonable distance make this a unique lens that stands out among the standard lenses for portrait photography.

With the M Lens Adapter for Leica L (sold separately), the lens can be attached to various cameras with L mounts, such as the Leica SL system. When used with the Leica SL and Leica SL2, the lens type is automatically identified through a 6-bit code, and exposure compensation and optimal image data processing are performed. This means that even when using the Leica SL system, the best possible image rendition can be achieved by taking full advantage of the high-performance, high-resolution image sensor.
