Project Outline-----------
Masamune Shirow, author of the enthusiastically popular “Ghost in the Shell,” made his major debut in 1985 with the science fiction manga ‘Appleseed’ and began serializing “Ghost in the Shell” in 1989. His worldview, which seems to foresee today's information society and incorporates cutting-edge technology that had not yet penetrated the world at that time with a unique sensibility, has fascinated many people. The detailed drawings, the plots with a vast amount of information, and the artist's words that extend to the “outside of the columns” add heat to the work and stir the reader's imagination. Many creators have been influenced by Shirow's worldview, in which philosophical exploration is interwoven, and continue to produce works in a variety of genres.
Black Magic,“ an early collection of Shirow's works, depicts a world in which the super-giant computer ”Nemesis" is responsible for politics. Appleseed," a science fiction action film about Dunan, a SWAT officer, and Briareos, a full-body cyborg, living in an abandoned city after World War V. Dominion“ comically depicts the battle between Leona, a member of the ”Police Tank Corps," and her favorite small tank, Bonaparte, against a gang of villains, the Takeevils. Ghost in the Shell“ depicts the battles of ”Public Security Section 9," an offensive organization under the direct control of the prime minister. The fantasy work “Sacred Art Super-Offensive Shell ORION” in which super-ancient magicians and summoned gods fight over the “Sacred Art Nine Dragons”.
This exhibition traces the diverse range of Shirow's works and his current activities through analog and digital manuscripts, and introduces the artist's collection of books and comments, giving viewers a closer look into the personal side of Shirow Masamune. Please enjoy the first large-scale exhibition of Shirow Masamune's works.
