Like the first-generation Model A056, the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 was designed to be thoroughly compact and lightweight. By setting the focal length at 180mm on the telephoto side and adopting a variable-length zoom mechanism, the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is the smallest and lightest in its class, despite having a maximum aperture of F2.8 and a VC image stabilization mechanism (filter diameter: 67mm, maximum diameter: 83mm, length: 156.5mm (at 70mm), mass 855g). This overwhelming mobility allows the lens to be well balanced with the camera body, making it easy to enjoy shooting large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses.

- New optical design delivers uncompromised optical performance throughout the entire 70-180mm zoom range
The lens is composed of 20 elements in 15 groups. The optical design has been reviewed from the very beginning, and the luxurious and appropriately arranged special glass lenses (one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens, one compound aspherical lens, three LD (Low Dispersion) lenses, and two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses) efficiently suppress chromatic aberration and other aberrations. The lens effectively suppresses chromatic aberration and other aberrations to achieve uncompromised high resolution performance throughout the entire zoom range. The BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating suppresses ghosting and flare, allowing the photographer to capture the finest details of the subject even in backlit conditions, resulting in an overwhelming sense of sharpness and clarity. The beautifully soft bokeh effect of the large F2.8 aperture is also a feature of this lens.

The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is equipped with VXD, a linear motor focus mechanism first introduced in the first-generation Model A056. While maintaining Tamron's highest level of high-speed, high-precision performance, the VXD mechanism further improves the ability to follow moving objects, such as sports and vehicles, which are often targeted with telephoto zoom lenses. This ensures that the decisive moment is not missed, not only when taking still images but also when shooting movies. The linear motor system generates less vibration during AF drive and is quieter than conventional drive systems, making it ideal for shooting still images and movies in environments where quietness is required.

The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is newly equipped with Tamron's proprietary VC image stabilization mechanism. It effectively suppresses camera shake, which tends to occur at telephoto ranges and when shooting moving objects or close-ups, to enable stable shooting. It also suppresses camera shake that tends to occur during hand-held shooting in low-light conditions, such as dimly lit rooms and night scenes, dramatically increasing the freedom of hand-held shooting. In addition, at focal lengths of 100mm or less, AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology is utilized to provide a correction effect that takes movie shooting into consideration.

- Minimum Focusing Distance 0.3m at wide-angle end and 0.85m at telephoto end
By optimizing the optical design, the minimum focusing distance at the wide-angle end has been successfully reduced from 0.85m of the first-generation Model A056 to 0.3m. This enables photographers to get one step closer to their subjects and take advantage of soft and beautiful bokeh. The maximum magnification of 1:2.6 is also extremely excellent, allowing you to enjoy the unique and powerful image creation that only this lens can offer.
